Honoring Dr. King: A Day of Service and the VITAS Difference

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we remember the life and work of the great civil rights leader. In his honor, many people across the country traditionally dedicate the day to helping others and serving their communities. However, due to COVID-19, the past two years have been more reserved occasions. Even so, this national holiday reminds us of what Dr. King stood for—his commitment to love and serve humanity. His legacy continues to inspire the VITAS mission and the work we are driven to do.

As Dr. King once said, "Greatness is determined by service... You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love." A visionary leader and human rights activist, Dr. King worked passionately—yet peacefully—for social change and justice.

VITAS Values

Dr. King’s message about the requirements for service echoes VITAS values: great work can be accomplished when it comes from a place of love. When we are driven by something greater than ourselves, we find fulfillment in enriching experiences.

  • Our patients and families come first, with compassionate care.

  • We take care of each other, providing support for our peers.

  • We do our best today and strive for even better tomorrow.

  • We are proud to make a difference, day in and day out.

Making a Difference

With commitment, compassion, and a can-do attitude, our team of experts at VITAS finds meaning and fulfillment in serving the community every single day.

Arndrea Alexander, Admissions Liaison for Volusia/Flagler County, FL, says, “My inspiration comes from providing resources and relief to families. The ability to prolong and improve the lives of loved ones is a gift that keeps giving. At VITAS, we all demonstrate a commitment to service and play our part in making a difference.” She has been with VITAS for about eleven years. The high levels of positive energy within the organization have helped her thrive.

Kristopher Halsey, Bereavement Services Manager in Philadelphia, PA, says, “My background is in clinical chaplaincy. I’ve always wanted to help. Serving others, going the extra mile, and lending a hand is rewarding. Providing grief support to families is my passion.” His work allows him to show empathy, honor special moments with patients and families, and build meaningful connections within the community.

Angelia Moore, Director of Market Development in Dallas, TX, says, “I’m an advocate and champion for hospice care for people of color. I feel compelled to share the gift of hospice. I began my career with VITAS 13 years ago, working in underserved communities in the southern sector as a hospital/physician VR. I noticed that people of color often accessed hospice care very late. To make a change, I knew I had to be a part of it.” She is passionate about her work and the impact it makes on the community.

Through service, these VITAS professionals give back to their communities. They demonstrate excellence, purpose, respect, and dedication to patients and families. At the heart of their work is a deep love for what they do. Their commitment to serving others goes above and beyond professional expectations.

With love in his heart, Dr. King lived his message of service. By living out their purpose and pursuing their passion, VITAS employees are proud to support community efforts and provide the care that makes a difference.
